The Dolch Sight Word List is a list of 220 common English words that was originally prepared by Edward William Dolch, PhD for his in 1948 book, "Problems in Reading". In order to achieve fluency in English reading, it is necessary for a child to be able to recognize each of these words, especially since none of these words can be sounded out phonetically.

The Dolch Sight Word List is divided into five levels:

Whether in K-12 education, home-schooling or ESL (English as a Second Language), it is essential that students become not only familiar with all these words, but are able to immediately recognize them. Teachers and educators therefore should try to devise activities around these words, and encouraging their learning and recognition.

One common activity is to make use of flash cards in class. One of my SEO friends recommended that I try a social website called stumbleupon to improve my generic rankings in search engines. Of course I was skeptical at first, but I tried it anyway. Stumbleupon shows you random websites that are based on your interests. I thought to myself, oh great, now I have to sit and look at a bunch of poor quality websites. But after I set my preferences, I expected the poorest and most irrelevant sites imaginable. I tried posting several of my websites up on their advertising section just to see how stumbleupon users would react to them. One of my websites received a lot of praise because I offered a useful free video on the top right of the home page that was relevant to my URL name and the landing page content. That particular video cost me $8k to produce and I was once tempted to set it up as a pay-per-view on google video but then I decided it would be best to offer it free to draw new and repeat visitors to my site.

I also tried entering one of my clients websites that has a recognized brand name. Within minutes it received 3 very positive reviews. In fact, two of the reviewers happened to be former employees of the company.

It was great to get the instant feedback for my websites and the exercise opened my eyes to some things I can do to further improve the way my websites project themselves to the public. Now I almost think of my websites as contestants on American Idol that might be voted off for poor content or delivery.

How can your websites avoid a thumbs down? I suggest asking as many of your friends to criticize your websites until the text, images or media on your sites themselves radiate The Law of Attraction. In other words, try to determine the positive ways your website should project itself to reach the targeted customers you are trying to attract.

From the early years of childhood, children are growing up in environments where they are subjected to the beliefs and ideologies of whatever surrounding they happen to live in. This kind of education also imposes a form of escapism as it teaches individuals to become occupied with facts, and placing importance upon technique which inevitably brings dullness and passiveness of the mind; however, like all escapes, this inevitably brings about confusion and misery. In the present day systems of education, the teacher and authority figures ingrain into childs mentality, the importance of practicing technique whether it is in the school where they are taught to acquire facts and information, or the religious institutes where people habitually follow principles and beliefs. However, the acquiring of various skills, rules and facts can only engulf us in chaos and suffering. Learning to read and write are necessary, as well as learning a profession, but can technique give us the ability to understand life and its problems? Surely it is secondary, and when we are taught to strive for technique we are obviously denying a far greater and significant part of life.

The school institutes condition children with information so that they can grow up into professionals, in whatever field. Therefore the individual becomes occupied with a particular area of knowledge and therefore a portion of life, as he or she becomes a specialist; the problem with this though, is how this is achieved and the intentions involved. The over emphasis of technique has given capacity, but without an understanding of life, these skills can only make a person ruthless. Technique has also provided us with a form of emotional and physical security, giving us a sense of vitality and aggressive independence. The teachers and institutes therefore strive to mould individuals into these kinds of people to fit into their perceptions and desires of what should be instead of realizing the reality of what is; therefore, the end result becomes more important than the means. However, what people fail to realize is that, the means determines the final outcome. So, now we begin to see how the past projects itself into the future and how children are becoming the continuation of the past and present. Thus, the present world crisis continues to exist because of this.

The teachers and authority figures are maintaining these systems of control through the means of discipline that ensures a result, which is more important to them than the means. However, the fundamental problem with discipline is that it is becoming a substitute for love, and is utilized continuously as a consequence of fear and personal projections. It is commonly used in the name of a just purpose, yet it is a hindrance to freedom, and freedom in the sense of the state of mind, can never be achieved through discipline, through resistance. Also, discipline is enforced by authority figures through reward and punishment, which instills further fear. The teachers subtly condition children with this concept, encouraging them through this fear to fight for the sake of the country, harvesting nationalism and patriotism which divides people, to fight in the name of God or to fight in the name of their family. The school, parents and religious institutes do this in many ways, encouraging children to get good grades and be the best, which breeds envy and competitiveness, to be patriotic, which breeds animosity and divisions, and to be a moral person, which breeds superficiality and greed - all in the desire of a reward. Now, the fears of the consequential punishments of not following these ideals are harsh enough for individuals to not even question why they follow them in the first place, but then again, the person would not know any better, due to the extent of their own conditioning and their ultimate submission to these beliefs as reality.

Could it be possible for parents and teachers to demonstrate to the child how to be considerate of others without the use of a reward or love as a bribe? For it is in this self-centred seeking that superficiality is also born , and there can be no respect for one another when there is a reward for it, because the fear of punishment and bribe then become more important that respect itself. How can a parent or teacher have respect or even love a child when they bribe the individual with a reward, and threaten them with a punishment? Surely, this is only encouraging fear and covetousness. Again, these teachers and authority figures therefore do not know any better themselves because they too have been brought up this in this way to act for the sake of a result; and until we truly realize that there can be action free of the desire to gain, the continuation of our fears, greed and envy, which form the ego, will persist to remain a part of our reality.

All this begins to contribute to the desire of escape from what is or the present, whether it be through the superficial modes of media, eating, religion, drugs or sex, which all provide a form of temporary self-gratification for the ego. In religion, individuals claim to love their God and may follow the beliefs and principles in order to be a good person, however, the motives of this process are all self-centred and self-seeking for personal gratification. When the individual preys to God in a time of strife, what they are doing is projecting their fears and hopes in their ego where they can satisfy their sorrow. God or Truth, is far beyond thought and emotional demands, it is a space where the mind is still and self-aware, and a still mind is not a disciplined mind, but a mind that understands the workings of the self.

Therefore, it has been established how children are being conditioned by systems of authority and how this breeds a lack of self-awareness, the ego and desires for escapism, so now, one may ask what is the right kind of education?. The right kind of education would help children understand life as a whole and not through the tunnel-vision perspective of profession; it would help individuals become integrated beings with an understanding of the full scope of the problems and miseries of the world in an unbiased and intelligent approach. The young would have the spirit of inquiry, seeking out truth from the bigger picture - political, religious, personal and environmental, which would bring a greater significance upon the young, thus bringing forth the hope for a better world. For this to ever take place, the parents and teachers themselves, must first tear down the beliefs and ideologies they hold and cultivate an integrated understanding of themselves and life; therefore the right kind of education is not only concerned with the young, but with the older generation as well, who must not be too absorbed in their own ways. The fundamental point is that if the individual truly loves the child, for love is essential to the process of integration; they would see to it that they have the right kind of educators, who could provide the child with an integrated understanding of the world we live in, for it is only until individuals possessing this awareness, that the possibility of manifesting a better world can come into being.

Most people think that's all retirement is about -- having enough money to sit on the deck, play golf, and visit the grandkids. But that's the old model -- not today's retirement. Start journaling, brainstorm with friends and family, and dream a lot. For inspiration, begin to brainstorm ideas and tools needed to help you plan the perfect retirement for YOU.

OK. So money does have something to do with it. Now's the time to figure out exactly how much you have and what you'll need. Maybe you'll discover that you have enough money to do everything you want to do. Congratulations!

But what if you don't? Will you need to work until seven years after you're dead? Or can you still create the retirement of your dreams? Of course you can. Here are some ways to make that happen.

1. First, sharpen your pencil and reconsider how much is enough? Maybe you don't need to stay in the big house and take care of all that stuff. Perhaps you'd love to simplify your life by living out of your RV as you travel the country. What could you downsize or let go of to buy yourself a more carefree existence?

2. Second, consider supplemental income. Wait a minute, didn't I just say you were going to stop working? Well, there's work. And, then there's work.

Larry was an art teacher in an urban high school for his entire career. In retirement, he followed his passion for painting and also volunteered at a national art society near his home. Think about what you love to do, the best times in your life, what you never had time for when you were raising children and working full time. If you love animals, become a pet sitter. Consider working in a day care center, if small children delight you.

4. Try seasonal employment. That's what Betty and Bob do. They say they're "rewired," not "retired." Each winter they close their Maryland home, pack up her home-based marketing business, and head to Snowmass, Colorado. For the next two months, they work for the ski corporation -- alongside college kids from Australia and a few other couples their age. He parks cars and slings skis on busses; she helps families plan their vacations at the resort. The minimum wage they make covers basic expenses; they each get a season's pass worth $1,799; and they only work a few days each week. The rest of the time they follow their passion on the ski slopes.

Seasonal employment is available at National Parks, community facilities, and as travel hosts to exotic places. Furthermore, there are lots of Web sites that specialize in senior employment.

5. But if you really want to make the most of the "third half" of your life, consider packaging what you know and sharing it with others. That's what Miriam did. Mortgage lenders are allowed to make there own application processes, so sometimes if not done with a formal written document, and with the use of employees and other loan officers or brokers, it can be unclear on whether or not the applicant is simply an inquiry or an applicant.

When the loan process begins with a potential applicant asking for the mortgage lender's qualifications, which may include loan amount, interest rates, loan to value ratio and debt to income ratio, it is considered just an inquiry. However, it is how the mortgage lender responds that qualifies the person as an inquiry or applicant, not what the applicant says or asks for. Meaning, the mortgage lender calls the shot when it comes to whether or not the information is just an inquiry or actual application.

For example, if a mortgage lender verbally disqualifies a potential borrower on legitimate underwriting basis, then the lender is treating the inquiry as an application. If enough information has been collected by the lender to qualify a loan, regardless if it is done through written documentation, and a denial has been communicated to the applicant, then it is considered an application. This is true regardless of the amount of information that has been collected, whether or not any fees have been paid, the lender's application process, if the prospective applicant has identified a loan amount, or whether the communication is verbal or written.

A mortgage lender can treat an inquiry as an inquiry if the information given is general, such as loan terms, the maximum amount that could be borrowed under various loan programs, and of course explaining the loan process that the prospect must follow in order to submit a mortgage application. If however, after this initial meeting occurs, and the mortgage lender has an opportunity to review the inquirers information and decides not to approve the inquirer and notifies him or her of this decision, the inquiry just became an application, and the mortgage lender is responsible for paper work to address this denied application.

An example of this would be if in the process of reviewing the inquirers information and the mortgage lender finds out about a pre-qualification aspect that is not met, such as not having a certain credit score or bankruptcy, and the mortgage lender does not approve this information, then this case has been treated as an application.

Another example of distinguishing an inquiry from an application is if the mortgage lender communicates with the potential borrower that his or her qualifications do not fall within the mortgage lender's guidelines, but offers compensating factors that might get the application approved, this is still an inquiry.

However, if the mortgage lender does not give positive compensating factors and the applicant is left with the impression that the lender would not approve the loan, then the inquiry would have turned into a denied application. The denial does not have to be explicit in nature and can be conveyed in any sort of communication that would lead a reasonable person to conclude that an application would be or has been denied.

If a prospective applicant is urged to continue, then the mortgage lender must further define what will be taking place or constitutes as an application. The mortgage lender can decide the qualifying factor for an application. For example, the lender may want the applicant to show a written contract to purchase a certain property and file a formal application with the lender to be reviewed, and then accepted or denied. Because it can be somewhat unclear in what is an inquiry and application, if you are unsure in the response you get, go ahead and ask the lender. If they do deny at any point in the process, whether it be beginning or end, they just give you a valid reason why. This reason why must be legitimate, meaning it is based only on your financial history and current information, and not on such factor as age, race, ethnicity etc.

Always speak directly and honestly with the mortgage lender or his or her staff, and understand all terms of a mortgage before you do apply. Also, pay attention to how they speak with you, and whether or not they turn your inquiry into an application by making decisions on the spot. If you have any discrepancies or questions, get clear by asking for clarification. Never make any decisions unless it is based on your own free will and on accurate, verified information.

During a recent survey on a large steel yacht, the client elected to do the sea trial himself and my presence was not required. I joined the ship at the ship lift ready for the lift and subsequent underwater inspection. Whilst waiting, I enquired how the sea trial had gone. Great said my client, except we had a bit of a fright when one of the rigging bottlescrews snapped To say my hair stood on end was somewhat of an understatement. What happened? What did you do? says I, Oh well, we had a spare on board and fitted another one onno sweat!

As you can imagine my attention was well and truly fixed upon the rest of these fittings during the subsequent inspection, especially when the client produced the broken bottlescrew for me to look at. The event was a common one, not at all unusual. It was a stainless steel bottlescrew with a Norseman screw down fitting to hold the stainless wire shroud. The exterior finish was rough and no load or stress numbers had been stamped or forged into the body of the screw. It was, in fact, a hybrid make of no known origin and the story became clearer as it unfolded.

The owner, a diligent young guy said, Weve been cruising for three to four years and as always money was a bit tight. We came across this great little place in Indonesia where these bottlescrews were so cheap we bought enough spares to replace the lot! Say no more. A year later, under a blue sky and a windless day just outside the Southport entrance on a sea trial, in almost idyllic conditions they changed tack and.bang. How differently this could have turned out.

The happy ending to this tale brings forth a subject that is generally unspoken of in daylight hours. STRESS CORROSION. We are all very aware of the normal day to day corrosion that occurs on board when seawater mixes with differing materials but stress corrosion is a different animal altogether and the results tend to be a little more catastrophic as the parts under stress tend to be quite important and are more often than not something to do with the safety and security of the boat.

HOW DOES STRESS CORROSION HAPPEN?
Well, the sad fact of it is that how stress corrosion actually happens is not fully understood. What we do know is that the metal goes without warning and often without any outward signs. It is also confined to high strength metals and the softer stuff such as gunmetal, silicon bronze and mild steel is unaffected as a general rule. It is worth a mention that aluminium rivets (N6 grade) are subject to stress corrosion and can lose their heads under certain conditions.

WHAT ARE THESE CONDITIONS?
The clue here is the word stress. The metal in question must be under tension and the temperature is usually high (about 150F, 65.5cever touched a bottlescrew left soaking up the sun on a hot day?). Finally, the metal must be regularly dosed in seawater whilst under load and ..bingo! The perfect conditions apply.

Locked in stresses during manufacture also count and injection pipes where temps are high (i.e. exhausts and elbows) are at risk.

However, back to the rigging.imagine the scenario. A badly designed bottlescrew (lots about) that has high inbuilt stresses, not 316 stainless but an unknown grade, rough surfaces and tensioned to the max for the stays and off you go, sailing in hot and salty conditions. Actually, even if you just leave the boat at its mooring those sinister forces will be at work. The wind in the rig produces a resonance that causes vibrations that can actually be heard and felt. The boat rolling produces alternating stresses. A yacht can roll in three seconds, one way, then the other. The rig keel bolts and rudder is loaded up then the load is applied the opposite way. Over thirty thousand times a day, one million cycles in thirty three days. How long has your yacht been rolling on its mooring?

Engines cause vibration and stress. Pipes, lines and anywhere that doesnt have rubber hoses that interconnect with rigid pipes are prone to stress and the subsequent cracking.

WHAT CAN WE DO?
Sensible precautions are the simple answer. Check all rigging screws have a traceable origin. Specifications when buying are important. Make sure load maximums are stamped onto components that are subject to stresses. Clean salt away on a regular basis from exhausts, engines and rig with fresh water and regularly check all rigging and change the lot after ten years use. Remember, mooring time counts, inducing fatigue cycles that will weaken rigging. Never fit high tensile bolts to keels or anywhere where the heat and chlorine (salt water) will abound. DO NOT over tighten these bolts at all!

Remember, stress corrosion starts with the tiniest cracks and often the component shears without warning because the cracks are too small. I have had people laugh at me when I produce my jewellers magnifying glass to look at rigging.but they soon stop when I show them the tiny hairline cracks I have found.

It is no laughing matter when thirty grands worth of rig crashes down onto someones head during a weekend away. Play it safe, do the job properly and then you can laughall the way to the bank.
