Building renovation and home improvement has certainly undergone a makeover since the days when granny sloshed a pot of whitewash over the cottage walls in the spring. Thirty years ago, a man was forgiven for being completely unable to change a light bulb or hang a picture. Nowadays, a man who cannot rebuild his house single handed is considered a bit of a wimp and not much of a catch.

I remember being the victim of a colorful landladys attempt at profit optimization in Hong Kong in the late seventies. She had decided to convert one apartment into two tiny units, thinking she would coin in double the rent just for building a few partition walls. The problem was; that was all she did.

The Irish policeman who had taken the unit next door discovered he had a bathroom but no space in which to turn around from the space where his toilet was sited. He therefore had to reverse into his toilet and vacate the room without turning. He was an extremely large person with no sense of humor and the result was volatile language at all hours of the day and night.

I, on the other hand, had the best of the deal, or so I thought, as my bathroom was very much larger with plenty of space to move around the bath, the wash basin and the toilet. By six oclock on my first day in the apartment I had changed my mind about my advantage over my friend next door, however, when I discovered that the light switches for both apartments were on the wall in his sitting room. Outraged, I rang the landlady to complain.

Dont be a sirry girl, she said (her Cantonese accent was very broad.) You have to put hand froo da hole.

Sure enough, there was a hole in the wall in the master bedroom, beautifully edged with decorative beading, through which it was possible to fit one hand and reach the light switch in the Irish policemans sitting room. Needless to say, we insisted the arrangement was changed as a matter of some urgency.

Bethlehem Steel- The Steel That Built America

The doors to the steelworks in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania closed for the last time in 1995, bringing to an end 140 years of steel-making in the town. Although no longer in its spiritual home, Bethlehem Steel continues to produce Steel, but its major production facility is now based in Burns Harbor, Indiana. The company has had its ups and downs, has been involved in providing steel for the construction of many railroads, bridges and iconic buildings throughout America and was the forerunner in the production of the steel girders used to build skyscrapers.

The first steel produced in Bethlehem was at the Saucona Iron Company, opened in 1857. Four years later the company changed its name to the Bethlehem Iron Company and in 1863 started mass production of iron railroad rails, used in the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. Over the next forty years contracts to supply steel were agreed with the US Navy, and by the time that Charles M. Schwab was appointed chairman in 1904 Bethlehem Steel Corporation not only had a huge plant in South Bethlehem, but ironworks in Cuba and shipyards on both US coasts.

In 1908 the company started production of wide-flange structural section steel, leading to a building revolution; those sections being used in the new phenomenon of skyscraper construction. Five years later Bethlehem Steel acquired the Fore Shipbuilding Company in Quincy, Mass. to become one of the countrys largest shipbuilders.

World War I provided Bethlehem Steel with a great opportunity to expand. At the start of the conflict the company had an annual production capacity of 1.1 million tons and employed 15,600 workers. By 1925, after supplying armor, ships, ordnance, guns and munitions for the US and Allied Forces during and immediately after the war, annual production grew to 8.5 million tons and the companys workforce had grown to 60,000.

In the early thirties Bethlehem Steel continued to grow through acquisition, buying steel companies on the Pacific coast as well as McClintic-Marshall Corp., a major bridge and building construction company. This was the golden era for American construction and Bethlehem Steel was responsible for such landmark constructions as: the Golden Gate Bridge, U.S. Supreme Court, Rockefeller Plaza, Waldorf-Astoria and the George Washington Bridge.

During World War II Bethlehem Steel shifted all its production into military hardware, employing close on 300,000 workers of which 180,000 were directly involved in ship-building. Post-war, the company returned to producing steel for US domestic projects, as well as the military, and continued to thrive.

The 1960s saw steel imported to the USA reaching record levels, but Bethlehem still home-produced steel for such iconic structures as Madison Square Garden, Newport Bridge and the second Delaware Memorial Bridge. In 1973 Bethlehem Steel reported an income of $207 million, producing record levels of 23.7 million tons of raw steel and 16.3million tons of finished steel. The company continued to thrive, but in the early 1980s imported steel was making more of an impact, which forced a radical restructure of Bethlehem Steel, resulting in a halving of the workforce over five years in the mid-80s. Consolidation followed over the next ten years and reluctantly the production facility at Bethlehem where it all began was shut down in 1995.

Today, Bethlehem has recovered from the loss of its steelworks and is undergoing an economic and cultural renaissance. Hotels in Bethlehem once used by those who had business at the steelworks are now re-inventing themselves as tourist and conference centers. The steel may be long gone in Bethlehem, but the entrepreneurial spirit of its citizens is alive and well.

Rebuilding Loyalty

INTRODUCTION

There is a general consensus today that there is a complete breakdown in corporate loyalty, that employees no longer maintain allegiances to their companies or their bosses. Years ago people joined companies usually for life. Workers figured if they worked hard enough and kept their noses clean, the company would take care of them. This is no longer the case. Due to the corporate changes implemented over the last twenty five years to remain competitive in a world economy, workers now typically live in a state of paranoia and think short-term employment as opposed to long-term, thus affecting their perspective on loyalty.

As some very visible examples of this, consider the dismantling of the studio system in Hollywood and the farm system in Major League Baseball. Instead of being groomed and nurtured from within the system, employees have been forced to become free-agents. Obviously, this encourages individualism as opposed to teamwork. I chuckle when I hear an executive become exasperated that there isn't any loyalty in his company anymore. Why should there be if he promotes a corporate culture that doesn't encourage loyalty?

Let's understand this from the outset, loyalty represents trust. It means a person is confident that something will behave predictably, positively, and to their benefit. As a result, they will willingly pledge their allegiance to it. If it doesn't behave in this manner, loyalty will be shattered.

There are three types of loyalty we commonly come in contact with: Product, Institutional, and Person:

PRODUCT LOYALTY

I'm sure we all know someone who has allegiances to products. For example, I have a friend whose family has been buying Buick automobiles literally for generations. Even though the body styles have changed over the years, they have found it to be a trustworthy product and have remained loyal customers for decades. I also have a business contact who refuses to fly on anything but Boeing aircraft. Back in 1985 there was a consumer uproar when Coca-Cola changed their formula and introduced "New Coke." Loyal customers finally forced the company to reintroduce the original formula under the name, "Coca-Cola Classic" (as we know it today).

People form attachments to products because they like it, have become familiar with it, and are confident it will perform routinely and to their benefit. They will even go so far as to adapt their lifestyle to the product and become dependent on it, just like a drug, even tolerating modest changes in price and attributes. But if the product changes radically, becomes unreliable, or skyrockets in price, then loyalty is shattered and the consumer looks for other alternatives. To illustrate, consider the American automotive industry; for years, people loyally purchased American automobiles because they believed them to be well built and tailored to the needs of the American public. Foreign automobiles were originally considered as nothing more than a curiosity that was out of step with the public. But because of some serious missteps by Detroit, consumer loyalty was shattered and transferred to foreign car manufacturers, particularly the Japanese and Germans who worked overtime to cultivate consumer loyalty.

Loyalty in this regards does not require a product to be best in its class. In fact, a lot of mediocre products command consumer loyalty simply because consumers perceive them as quality goods. For example, I do not consider Microsoft products to be the best of their kind, yet they command incredible consumer loyalty as people perceive them as "state of the art." Even though there are many other excellent products out there with superior features, Microsoft commands the PC simply because they have been able to cultivate consumer confidence. But if they ever lose this confidence, there will undoubtedly be others to take their place.

INSTITUTIONAL LOYALTY

We see instances of institutional loyalty in such things as political parties (Democrats, Republicans), branches of the military (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy), countries and communities, charities, sports teams, fraternal organizations, and companies. Here, people fervently believe in the institution they belong to and proudly display their loyalty through such things as lapel pins, bumper stickers, tattoos, web sites or whatever. Most people realize such institutions are not perfect. Nevertheless, they support it through thick and thin simply because they believe it to be a good and noble institution. The only time they will break with it is if the institution radically changes course and is no longer in line with their personal interests and values. For example, we have seen examples of people switching from one political party to another due to a change in policies and interests.

Quite often, the loyalty for an institution or office within it supersedes the loyalty to the person holding the office. We see numerous examples of this in the military and government alone. True, soldiers are more apt to follow certain leaders into battle they believe in, but they will also perform their duty out of a greater sense of loyalty to the institution.

Corporations tend to be a bit different though since the integrity of such institutions are being questioned today. This is probably due to corporate cultures that are failing to maintain the interests of the workers. Whereas I still have friends employed by big businesses who have long tenure with their companies, younger workers tend to lack faith in the institutions and find the company's interests are not compatible with their own. Their only motivation is to pick up a paycheck, nothing more, nothing less. This is somewhat sad as it means their work is not aligned with their interests which does not promote a sense of craftsmanship.

PERSONAL LOYALTY

Loyalty to a particular individual is perhaps more common than the other two. This is because people are social animals and tend to identify with the interests of others (the "birds of a feather" phenomenon). In terms of superior/subordinate relationships, with rare exception, we want to believe in our leaders. We want them to worry about charting the right course of action while we worry about tending to our own particular work effort. People are more inclined to follow a leader, even through the most difficult of times, whom they are loyal to than someone they do not trust. But understand this, loyalty at this level is a two-way street; not only does a manager require the loyalty of his workers, the workers require the loyalty of the manager. This requires effective social and communications skills (people skills). The manager must demonstrate he knows what he is doing, knows the right path to take, and maintains the interests of his subordinates. Conversely, the workers must demonstrate to the manager they are willing to put forth the necessary effort to see a job through to completion. In other words, both parties depend on each other, which brings us back to trust. And if the trust is ever broken, harmony is disrupted, and the manager and workers begin to work at odds against each other, which, of course, is counterproductive and a very unhealthy working environment.

REBUILDING LOYALTY

If our trust in someone or something is broken, it is difficult to repair, but not impossible. If Product Loyalty is broken, consumer confidence has to be rebuilt; If Institutional Loyalty is broken, the corporate culture has to be overhauled, and; If Personal Loyalty is broken, it will be the most difficult to correct due to the human dynamics involved. In any event, rebuilding loyalty will be a long and costly process. The best thing to do is not to lose it in the first place.

Loyalty is broken when expectations radically diverge from what happens in practice. People are willing to forgive errors or indiscretions to a point, primarily because as creatures of habit we are comfortable with the status quo and do not necessarily want to change. But if problems become significant without any sign of being remedied, people will lose patience and faith in the object of attention. Let's take the 1985 Coca-Cola incident as an example; had the company made a minor change in the Coke formula, it probably would have been accepted. They didn't. The "New Coke" formula was a radical departure from the old formula. Regardless of the considerable marketing hype of the new product, customers lost confidence in it and started a rebellion to reintroduce the old formula.

Worker loyalty is lost when they become convinced their interests are not being maintained by management, and lack confidence in the direction of the company. This typically occurs when:

Promises are not kept by management.

Worker jobs are in peril of being outsourced.

The company is losing market share.

The workers do not understand the deployment or withdrawal of certain products or services.

Whether such scenarios are real or not, worker loyalty will be lost if management's judgment is perceived as questionable. A lot of this can be corrected simply by effective communications to clear up misunderstandings and to explain the rationale for a course of action. Even if the chips are down, workers are more likely to remain loyal if they understand and believe in the course management has plotted.

Worker loyalty in management is also based on ethics and quality. If the actions of management are perceived as unscrupulous or unsavory, workers will quickly lose faith in them. Further, if workers do not have confidence in the quality of the products or services they are producing and selling (that they know them to be based on inferior workmanship), this too will be a bad reflection of management's integrity.

Look, its really quite simple, workers want to be treated fairly, lead a worthy and meaningful life, and have confidence in the direction of their company. This requires management to improve their people skills, refine the corporate culture, and enact effective communications. In return, management should rightfully expect loyalty from the work force.

Deeds speak louder than words. In order for management to be credible with workers, they must demonstrate they have the best interests of their employees in mind. Let me give you an example, every once and awhile in Major League Baseball you see a manager charge out to an umpire during a game to challenge a call and becomes quite vocal and animated (Earl Weaver and Billy Martin were legendary in this regard). Quite often, such challenges are done more for demonstrative purposes as opposed to actually refuting a call by the umpire. Basically, the histrionics are used by the managers to tell their own team that he believes in his players and is willing to fight to protect their interests. Now I'm not suggesting that a corporate officer or manager needs to pick a fight with someone, but some public demonstration of his sincerity is needed to express his commitment to his workers, be it a reward, a testimony, a recognition or whatever; something to demonstrate he has the best interests of his employees in mind. This includes affecting the corporate culture and establishing the proper work environment. Some managers have little sensitivity for the type of work their people have to perform. In fact, they prefer a master/slave relationship thereby elevating their ego. But if they create an environment that empowers employees and treats them like professionals, thereby giving them a sense of purpose, they tend to become more dedicated and loyal to the company.

Some people contend you can buy loyalty. I do not subscribe to this notion. In this situation, people will only be loyal as long as the cash continues to roll in. When it stops (or if someone outbids another), people move on. Do not confuse loyalty with bribery. Loyalty means you believe in something and are willing to stand by it through good times as well as bad.

CONCLUSION

Years ago, Les Matthies, the legendary "Dean of Systems" admonished me, "As long as someone provides you with a job, be loyal to that person; don't gossip and ridicule him; do your job, and do it right. If you don't like the person, then get out and do something else." What worries me is that Les' sentiments are lost in today's world. Loyalty is rapidly becoming a lost virtue. Interestingly, I have met a lot of people in recent years complaining how loyalty is lost in corporate America, as well as other institutions such as nonprofit organizations. These same people all want to see loyalty become part of our core values again, but they are all waiting for someone else to take the first step in making this happen. If you believe in the necessity of loyalty, that it adds value to our lives, then it behooves all of us to take the first step.

The philosopher John Mackensie said, "The distinction between what is real and what is imaginary is not one that can be finely maintained...all existing things are... imaginary". I think he meant that we must believe in possibilities to make them a reality. Yes, I'm in on that.

With that thought in mind, I thought I would create a world that was not separated from itself but united. Of course, I have to start with myself. I must believe that it is up to me to be the changes I want to express. If I rely on others to do it for me, then I am living through others and am not following my truth. There is no" The Truth" but there is "My (Our) Truth".

With that awareness I can create my world, my truth. In that world I am surrounded by Love. I have the power to go within myself to deal with the contrasts that I experience in order to grow. I face fear with acceptance. I face life with great expectations. I see myself as a vessel of Love.

Each day would bring connection to all life. I feel no separation because of diversity. All life is one, yet diverse. Differences in thought are resolved by agreement. Anger, hatred and jealousy are replaced with compassion. Wars are replaced with festivals of unity. Death is acknowledged as normal passage to another reality. Communication does not end with physical death.

Through thought I would communicate with my fellow travelers. Words would be replaced with honest thoughts, so misunderstandings would dissolve. Fun and Laughter would be synonymous with work. Work would be my life's mission. Poverty is replaced by abundance, for my thoughts give power to each. Love would be a constant state of mind, not a mysterious quest.

My world's unity would create a government of freedom. People's integrity create the structure. Equality of thought would direct diversity in understanding. Religion would be free from politics and separatism. Energy would abundantly fuel all endeavors, without transgression. Peace would have no opposite. Sharing would have no ending. Giving would be my leader and kindness would be my school.

My consciousness is eternal, I am expressing and becoming what I imagine in order to be a granger version of myself. My imagination becomes my reality, so that I can be the mirror of my source, the all that is. The Divine made physical.

Is there Any Future in HYIP Sites?

Some see HYIP's as a gamble, others a game but for many they a source of significant income. The potential for loss is apparent from the outset, most sites even clearly state that there is a risk and that you shouldn't invest more than you can afford to lose.

Let's face it, no one wants to throw away their cash, but the truth is many are tempted by high rates of return and the promise of being able to sack your boss. Comments such as this are misleading and designed to do one thing only, GET YOUR MONEY. The victim is lured by the prospect of becoming financially free.

People are often more sceptical of programs which offer payments to read e-mails or take surveys, aware that there will be a significant amount of time spent in front of your PC working before you see any income at all. Yet time and time again, new sites come and tempt hundreds of thousands of people to part with money they can ill afford before running off into the night.

So where does the HYIP world go from here?

The truth is without changing public opinion there isn't many directions it can take, the most likely is to remain static in its current state with thousands of programs available. Most sites short lived and returning only to a select few who join early, some lasting longer before the owners pull the plug, and a minority who continue to make money for its investors in the long term.

The problem at the moment is that it's simply too easy for anyone to set up a site using some freely available scripts with the sole purpose of enticing enough victims to make a quick buck before closing and retaining the invested funds.

The solution is available, but it's not an easy road, and few will be prepared to take it. One of my previous articles goes some way to explaining why most won't stand up and be counted. When it comes to cleaning up the HYIP act, many would rather let it RIP. But as I stated in that article, I won't be dissuaded, with more and more support for my actions I believe we can turn the corner and move this industry into a better dimension. It will take time, and it won't be easy, but its worth the effort.

Creative Writing: Taking Your Profile Interview to the Next Level

Profiles are one of the most difficult types of articles to writeat least, thats true for me. If you find profiles easy, then consider yourself lucky.

Difficult or not, with profiles as with any other writing, research can do a lot to pull you through.

Unless youre a veteran writer, you may think that, in order to do a profile, you simply interview the person (if youre profiling a person rather than a business), and maybe a few other people for added interest. Thats partly true, but heres a tip: Research the basics beforehand so you can focus on the juicy stuff during the interview.

What do I mean by basics? I mean the not-so-juicy details that form the framework of the profile. These are details like where the person was born; where they went to high school, college or grad school; what jobs theyve held; if theyve ever served in the military; or if theyve ever received any honors or awards. Consider them the skeleton of your story. Theyre small and mundane, but necessary. With the skeleton out of the way, you can go in ready to tackle the real muscle without wasting time on the small stuff.

Here are a few ways to research a person before a profile:

1. Obtain their resume or vita. Think about it; a resume is a persons professional life in a one-page nutshell. Much of the basic information you needsuch as education and previous employmentyoull find in this document. Some people will have their resumes posted on their websites. Others will send them to you if you call and ask.

2. Find previous articles written about the person. If other journalists have worked to dig into this persons life, why not reap some of the rewards? Youll often find answers to deeper questions, which can form the foundation for even more probing questions of your own. Again, check the persons website; websites often contain articles favorable to the person. However, if youre not after a strictly feel-good piece, youll also want to check other sources.

3. Read what theyve written. If the person has written articles, books, theses, etc., you can often use them to find out a lot about the persons personality and philosophy. If the person is a prolific writer, you probably wont have time to read everything. However, even a snippet of their writing will be better than nothing.

Use the information you gain from these sources to form detailed, probing questionsor silly questions to lighten the mood of your article. Armed with a little knowledge, you can walk into any profile interview with confidence. Youll appear prepared and professionala sure hit with interviewees and editors!

I have been fortunate enough to network with the very big players in network marketing, as well as little players, and everywhere in between. What I have observed I have come to call the timeless principles of network marketing success.

1. The utterly persistent will always meet success. 2. There is something about having that persistence that fuels ever more growth. When you have that persistence you have a die hard belief to find some way to build the business no matter what. For some people that may just be talking to more people like advocated, for others it might be utilizing marketing strategies to generate more leads. Whatever it isthe persistence factor is what pushes a certain type of person to FIND information that leads to success in network marketing while others would give up.

3. Networkers never stop networking. I have talked to highly successful network marketers who keep lists of every single person they have ever talked tojust incase. They have direct mailing lists, heavy hitters lists; they have all sorts of list. That way, if the time came when they needed a new company, they already have an infrastructure in place to rebuild a colossal organization at their fingertips.

4. They constantly develop themselves, educated themselves, and fill themselves up with more value. Because LEADERS, by their very nature, offer value to other people. And the only way we can do that is if we have built our own value. Success in network marketing can be created by constantly building your own value. Dont ever stop.

These timeless principles have not failed, nor will they fail. Embody them, study them, and devote yourself to them and success will find you.

Can a Woman With PCOS Get Pregnant?

One of the most common questions I get from women who are newly diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome is Will I ever get pregnant? I have not been able to find specific studies regarding fertility and PCOS-likely because it is so hard to track those who are successful in getting pregnant without medical intervention. One source said that women with PCOS have an 80-90 percent chance of having a baby, but I was unable to find any research studies to back this up. While some women with polycystic ovarian syndrome will not be able to get pregnant, I believe that the majority can and do eventually have healthy babies.

First, 5-10% of women of childbearing age have PCOS. If their symptoms are mild they are often undiagnosed. If they have even one child, many physicians will say they can not have PCOS. This is ridiculous if you look at the diagnostic criteria. The most common criteria for diagnosis include a failure to ovulate regularly. However, for many women this means they have long cycles (35 days or longer in many cases) but they DO ovulate.

Some women with PCOS have unhealthy eggs because their periods are too far apart, in many cases this is correctable with herbs, diet or drugs. Many women with PCOS also have a thyroid condition. Frequently, if this is treated they begin to ovulate. Many women with PCOS have frequent miscarriages, but they eventually have a healthy babyoften with the help of progesterone cream or suppositories. Some women find that losing weight, taking vitex or other herbs, or reducing stress cause them to begin ovulating (for me it was all three!). Some learn to detect ovulation through cervical mucus and basal body temperatures (BBT or temperature charting). Again, these women often have healthy babies without medical intervention.

It is hard to know how many women with PCOS become pregnant without help since many women are first diagnosed with PCOS because they are having trouble getting pregnant. Often metformin or other insulin-sensitizing drugs work wonders and they are able to get pregnant and carry a baby to term.

The fact is, only a small percentage of women with PCOS ever make it to the stage of trying fertility drugs. Clomid (clomiphene citrate) is often the first drug of choice since it is cheap and easy to take. I did find studies indicating that Clomid alone works for 70% of women with PCOS. Other women find that they need Clomid and metformin or stronger fertility drugs. The success rate tends to drop a bit as time passes and stronger methods are tried, but the bottom line is that most women who have PCOS and want children have them.

Even for those who are told they will never succeed at getting and staying pregnant, there is much reason to hope. Several close friends of mine have surprised themselves and their doctors by getting pregnant after years of infertility. Lisa adopted three children and then found herself pregnant in her late 30s. It seems that for many women their PCOS symptoms mellow out as they get older. Anne went to the doctor to find out why she was infertile after several years of marriageshe was 3 already months pregnant and boy number two followed just 15 months later. Susan had three miscarriages and was told she would never carry a baby to term. Four months later she was pregnant with her daughter and her son is two years younger. Barb got pregnant when she was not even thinking of fertility and now counts herself extremely blessed to have two healthy boys.

I know many women who have done everything possible to get pregnant, even IVF, and have not succeeded. But the majority of women with PCOS DO get pregnant. There is even more reason to hope for the young women who are just now learning they have PCOS. First, they are more likely to be diagnosed at all. This means many women will be diagnosed who would have been overlooked ten or fifteen years ago when my generation was first beginning the march from doctor to doctor looking for answers. We know so much more than we did then. Treatments, both natural and medical, are much, much better than ever. In addition, being diagnosed now means they have the chance to prevent much of the physical and emotional trauma older women have experienced because our doctors just didnt know how to help us.

My advice to any particular woman is to do all you can to increase your fertility (see my other articles and my books for more information about this). Then do your best to relax and let your body work. The odds are with you in the long run.

The Soul Of A Home

You know the one we're talking about. It's the room you head to when your sister calls at 3:00 a.m. with a crying newborn and panic in her voice. It's the room where your kids visit with you after school and tell you all about their day. It's the room where your dearest friends gather for drinks, where your spouse makes you laugh after a long day, where you go to count your blessings, or to have a quiet cup of tea.

It's the room closest to your heart.

Every home has one. One room that family life seems to gravitate to for whatever reason. It doesn't have to be the most beautiful, the most comfortable, or even the most logical, but it's there. It could be the kitchen, the family room, or even your bedroom. You all just end up there somehow, talking and laughing and sharing experiences.

Whatever this magic room may be, you can turn it into a space more conducive for relaxing and spending time in with very little effort. The most important element is already there. The room has love and soul and character in place. All you need to add is the supporting cast.

If the kitchen is the heart of your home, look at what you do there. Cooking obviously, but what else? Is this where you bond with your closest friends, sharing coffee and laughter and cheering each other on? Do your children do their homework in there while you prepare dinner? Is this where Arts and Crafts time is? Do you and your spouse manage the household here in the evening, sharing a dessert?

Once you've taken a look at all the important events that are taking place here, you can better customize this space for your family.

If the kids do their homework at the dinner table, have a plastic bin stocked with supplies they might need such as a calculator, pens, pencils, paper, a ruler, construction paper, etc. Once homework is done this can be slid into a cabinet or tucked away until the next day. Backpacks can be hung on hooks with homework safely inside until the race for the bus begins the next morning.

This same rule can be applied for arts and crafts materials. Have all supplies tucked into a bin to make take out and cleanup a breeze.

If the family room is where you all end up, keep it stocked for family time. Keep games available so if a last-minute decision is made to delve into Monopoly for the evening's entertainment, you don't have to race through the house looking for it. Make sure the kids have some of their toys in an appropriate corner, so if you want to spend time with them, you can all play together. A family jigsaw puzzle corner might be fun.

Also look at the furniture. If the kids enjoy playing on the floor, is the layout conducive to that? Rearranging a bit might make it easier for them to zoom their cars around, or lay on the floor coloring.

Only you know how your family truly functions, so customizing a room to work better won't be hard to do. We're not talking major makeover here, but small touches you can add to make the room function just a little bit better. The fabric that makes up your family's life is being woven in this room, the soul of your home, and there's no better way to honor that than by devoting some energy to making it a better place to be.

People may also be exposed to asbestos through tainted drinking water, use of products that contain vermiculite such as some pesticides and fertilizers, exposure to some older appliances that contain asbestos or by living with a person who is exposed to the material. Once a diagnosis has been made, a treatment option will be prescribed. Prognosis for people with benign multicystic mesothelioma is significantly better compared to those with other forms of mesothelioma. With early diagnosis and prompt treatment, patients can expect a better outcome compared to people with the malignant form.

Treatment
The goal of treating benign multicystic mesothelioma is to remove the cause of the pain or discomfort. Which treatment options to use will depend on the need for an immediate solution and on the severity of the disease. In this case, the target of the treatment is to eliminate the tumors. It's not always possible to eradicate all tumors present in the affected area, but surgical removal will prevent symptoms and alleviate any pain.

Chemotherapy may also be used to target the infected areas. With radiation therapy, tumors are either shrunk or destroyed using high energy beams. As a final solution to the disease, it is important that further exposure to asbestos is either limited to such an extreme as to produce only the minimum risk, or to avoid even mild exposure altogether.

In my first piece on this subject titled Homosexuality: Let's Reopen the Debate and published at Ezinearticles.com, I received readers' comments that have been pretty decent considering the inflammatory nature of the subject of the essay. I always appreciate readers' comments, even the loony ones, and I do try to think through them to see what I can learn as well as see if I've made some glaring error in my prose.

Let me assure you that if you plan to start writing on ANY subject and publish something, readers will write you and point out your flubs.

The purpose of this essay is to answer three of my readers' comments and to make some additional remarks on the subject of homosexuality.

I meant to write this piece more than a week ago, since this month, May 17 to be exact, marked the one-year anniversary of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts, and I wanted to come out with this essay then. But I missed my self-imposed deadline. So here goes, ready or not.

1. "You say that "there is no reason homosexuals cannot change"(paraphrased). I'm assuming the reason you think homosexuality is unnatural is because of the entirely non-biblical teachings of the Catholic Church for the past several hundred years."

My Comments: Sometimes I don't know which it is that bothers me the most, the issue of homosexuality being accepted as perfectly wonderful and natural, or the apparent inability of Americans to reason correctly about most anything. I wonder if critical thinking skills are even taught in American schools anymore.

Two points: The first is that in my original essay, I was careful NOT to refer to or even hint at anything religious. I do possess a religious bias and it is NOT Catholic. But I was careful to discuss the scientific evidence in the first essay and not explore the theological or philosophical disciplines. I should add here there was a time when theology and philosophy would have been disciplines included in the argumentation of this issue. They are no longer, I believe, because the average American is INCAPABLE of using these disciplines due to mass ignorance of them. It isn't that they cannot but it is that they are willfully ignorant in the use of these disciplines.

The second point is that this reader's comment is a good example of distorting someone's position in order to make it easier to attack. This is the Straw Man Argument, is it not? This always, in my experience, seems to be the fall back position of those who would try to defend the Gay platform. When anyone, no matter their bias, questions the gay premises, the almost immediate reaction is,

"Oh, no one but those with the most hateful religious prejudice could possibly doubt our position and views."

Gays do this, and it is really a pretense, in order to keep the argument framed within parameters they can attack. Gays and those who support them will do this because they know that they are in trouble if they try to argue the scientific evidence as I pointed out in my first essay. Therefore, they distort the position of anyone who attempts to offer a reasoned and well- argued opposition to their platform as, "no one but those with the most hateful religious prejudice could possibly doubt our position and views".

This is, in my view, not sound thinking.

2. "The problem I have with your opinion is there is every reason to believe homosexuality is genetic. And there is every reason to believe that heterosexuality is genetic. This would mean there is every reason to believe that bisexuality is genetic--and I think that's the truth. After all, if bisexuality weren't natural then ancient cultures like the Greeks wouldn't have had the highly prevalent rates of homosexual behaviors that they did. Which means homosexual behavior is entirely natural."

My Comments: This reader offered no arguments to contradict the ones I made in the first essay. Sadly, this is so typical. I run into this situation all the time in the various op-ed's and feature articles I write and publish. I will receive ranting and raving from readers who offer subjective opinions with absolutely no substance.

This reader seems to want to try to prove that homosexuality is natural since ancient cultures would not have had the "highly prevalent rates of homosexual behaviors that they did.", if homosexuality wasn't natural.

To this reader I would say the following:

There were plenty of practices that were "highly prevalent" in ancient cultures. One such was sacrificing babies to the fire-god Molech. By your reasoning, if the validity of a practice of something is determined by its prevelance in an ancient culture or civilization thus meaning the practice is natural, then would it be ok to rekindle Molech worship and start throwing babies into the fires of Molech?

This is, in my view, is still not sound thinking.

3. "There exists one glaring falsehood in your article. Citing a 50% concordance rate genetically, you therefore say it can't be genetic. However, that 50% in itself proves there is a significant genetic influence, simply because the chance of homosexuality is 50%, and not the normative chance for a regular random sample."

My Comments: This reader really offered some excellent commentary and I wish he or she would have included an e-mail address so we could chat a bit more. To this person's observation, I would like to make a few comments.

As I said in my first essay, the way in which this 50% concordant rate was arrived at is seriously flawed. It was not done in a lab looking at the DNA of a random sampling. It was achieved through verbal surveys. Here is what I originally said: "In the study, A Genetic Study of Male Sexual Orientation, researchers Michael Bailey and Richard C. Pillard discovered in their sample group that half of the identical twins pairs were both gay while the other half had one gay member in the pair and the other was heterosexual. That means a 50% concordance rate. A concordant twin-pair would mean that both twins members were gay while a disconcordant twin-pair would have one gay member and one straight member."

This was done by interviewing the subjects. As I mentioned in my first essay, it is notoriously difficult to try to obtain accurate results for the simple reason that you cannot rule out mitigating constructs such as "telling the truth". They may, in the survey, tell the truth and then again, they may not. Many of the twin pairs had only one member of the pair show up for the interview. If that one member, who identified himself as gay, claimed that his twin was also gay, how could you possibly guarantee the truthfulness of that statement? You cannot. The testability of that is impossible! Yet these were the results reported.

I also said this:

"The immediate and glaring problem here is that identical twins are genetic clones of each other. If one member of the twin pair is gay, and being gay is a genetically coded thing, then the other member of the twin pair must be gay also. It would be impossible to have anything other than a 100% concordance rate." I still stand by this statement and I hope you get the importance of this.

In the identical twin studies, the concordance rate would have to be 100%--something researchers Michael Bailey and Richard C. Pillard most certainly knew but reported their flawed results nevertheless.

Let me restate that these rates were NOT discovered in a lab doing any genetic coding testing. These rates were arrived at through surveys. Be sure to read my original article for the full context (http://ezinearticles.com/?id=20558). A question that no reader addressed, to which I would love to hear an answer, is this:

"I mean, isnt the whole gay premise that since being gay is an innate, genetic trait, and since they cannot help being gay, that they should, as any other ethnic group, marry and even raise children? And how many times have we read that homosexuality is like race? It is like someone being black.

That is a horrible analogy but it is what the gays say. So, let me see if I am getting this. If being gay is like being black, and being gay works itself out in ones behavior as having sex with someone of the same sex, then how does being black work itself out in the behavior of a black person? Or, to carry this absurdity even further, how about a Chinese person? How does being Chinese work itself out in the behavior of a Chinese person? How does a Chinese person behave? What if the Chinese person is a Chinese-American, born and bred in the U.S.A.? How then would that work? Is it not someones behavior and not a state of being that we are talking about?"

I would invite any reader, if you please, to answer this argument. I would love to engage you in a civilized discussion on this point.

But be careful. Don't resort to false appeals to authority, selective use of evidence, Ad Hominem arguments, Begging the Question arguments. Don't offer me something that cannot be tested, nor offer me vague terms or shifting definitions.

Think linearly. Write me!

Contrary to popular opinion, your prospect does NOT want to be SOLD.

I mean, if you are a rep in a network marketing company right now; at some point you were probably a prospect of your sponsor, right?

If you could go back in time; what would have been the ideal and best way that you could have been introduced or attracted to your current business?

So, ask yourself this question:

Are the marketing/prospecting methods you are currently using the best, most attractive, most professional and most effective way to bring people in to your business?

Are those methods based upon a 'scarcity mentality' OR are they based upon an 'Abundance Mentality'?

For example: Scarcity methods involve 'selling' the prospect on something and overcoming objections, and flashy presentations, and all kinds of incredible facts and figues designed to lure a person in, AS IF THEY ARE THE LAST PERSON ON EARTH AND YOU MUST SIGN THEM UP.

Contrast that with abundance mentality, which actually is a more passive, professional and comfortable way of truly ATTRACTING prospects to you who ARE ACTIVELY LOOKING for something, and letting them qualify themelves first before you even invest your valuable time with them. This embraces the concept that there are an endless amount of people out there who are actively looking for what you have, and there is no need to pull these silly sales pitches with people.

Which type of marketing/prospecting appeals to you the most?

Put yourself in the shoes of your prospect.

Would you rather be 'sold' on something with some sort of pitch, OR would you rather be able to find and get involved with something because you are actually actively looking for something and YOU make the moves to get involved on your own merit in your own time without someone breathing down your neck about it?

To learn what prospects truly want, you need to learn what they DON'T want first, and what methods of prospecting they HATE, before you can even think about talking to anyone about your business.

Remember, your upline/sponsor WILL NOT build your business for you. You must think for yourself and become an educated, independent marketer who can stand on his/her own with or without an upline. The quicker you do that, the quicker you can experience true success and present yourself as an expert in your field.

The changes in hormone levels produced by implantation of the embryo, especially the hormone "human chorionic gonadotropin" (hCG), cause more frequent urination.

3. Elevated Body Temperature - it's normal to have an increase in body temperature at ovulation. Your basal body temperature staying elevated after ovulation is completed and remaining elevated through when your period should begin can be one of the very early signs of pregnancy.

4. Missing a Menstrual Period - a missed period is one of the obvious 10 pregnancy signs. However, you can miss a period for other reasons including illness, stress, hormone imbalance and reactions to foods or medications. If your menstrual cycle normally occurs very regularly, missing a period can be a sign.

5. Fatigue - lack of energy as one of the very early signs of pregnancy may be hard to distinguish from other kinds of exhaustion. Feeling tired is related to the change in hormones in the body, which usually disappears as the body adjusts to the new hormone levels.

6. Cramping - the uterus can contract often and regularly. Moving around, exercise and orgasm all can trigger uterine cramping in early pregnancy.

7. Nausea - morning sickness is the name given to feeling nauseated when pregnant. Of the 10 pregnancy signs, only about half of pregnant women experience nausea, and feeling nauseated can happen any time of the day or night.

8. Tender Nipples and Breasts - one of the very early signs of pregnancy is a feeling of tenderness in the breasts and nipples. The good news is that these feelings of tenderness go away as the body becomes accustomed to the new hormone levels.

9. Darker Areolas - the area around the nipples becomes darker as early as one week after conception. The bumps on the areolas may look more prominent.

10. Constipation - you may notice a change in your bowels in early pregnancy. The intestines may relax and function less due to changing hormones and be one of the 10 pregnancy signs.

Once the very early signs of pregnancy are experienced, confirm pregnancy by using one of the better home pregnancy tests. There are major differences in the reliability of the home tests for pregnancy. A blood pregnancy test can be accurate as early as 8 to 10 days after conception, and a urine pregnancy test can be accurate as early as 10 to 14 days following conception. Pregnancy tests are not 100% accurate. If you feel you are pregnant but your pregnancy test result is negative, do the test again in a week or so and see your physician.

Remember to take good care of your body even before you become pregnant. Give up smoking and alcohol, eat healthy and begin exercising. Those first few weeks and your health are vitally important to help support healthy development of your new baby. Bastille Day in Paris

The day is a celebration of independence and liberty. Cities all over France will be celebrating the spirit of freedom and democracy but the major events will be held in the Capital, Paris, making it a great time to plan your visit and take part in the celebrations.

Bastile Day marks the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille in 1789, a prison which held political rebels who were considered by King Louis 16th to be unlawfully outspoken and troublesome.

At the time, France was ruled by a wealthy King and Queen who did nothing to improve the life of the poor, many of whom were starving on the streets. The middle class was growing and becoming more and more resentful of the life of luxury their leader was living, thanks to the heavy taxes imposed by the King, while France suffered massive foreign debt, and an unstable financial future.

Through their writings and public assemblies, these people called for rejection of the powerful monarchy and for the establishment of a free and democratic society, with leaders elected by the people. Anyone seen to be challenging the authority of the King was arrested and imprisoned in the Bastille. A large cache of weapons was also stored at the prison, making it the perfect symbol of the Kings power and tyranny.

On the 14th July, 1789, a public demonstration protesting the incarceration of these prisoners and rejecting the rule of the king gathered momentum outside the prison walls. At least 1,000 citizens managed to overpower the guards and take hold of the building, burning it to the ground. 98 attackers were killed, as well as one of the guards defending the prison. It was the start of the French Revolution. As the middle class took to the streets, building barricades and fighting the royal army who were struggling to gain control, the King fled with his wife for Versailles, relinquishing his control of the nation.

Soon after this event, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was drafted, outlining man's equal liberties, the rights to elect their own representatives, reject oppression and communicate freely, without fear of prosecution. The country was later declared a republic for the first time in 1792.

A year after the storming of the Bastille, a festival was held to mark the anniversary of its destruction, and the French have continued to celebrate the moment since then. In 1880, Bastille Day was declared an official national holiday under the motto of 'liberty, equality and fraternity', the values which are represented on the French flag- le Tricolour.

Although France was not free continuously from that moment on, it was the values that these men were fighting for that remains symbolic for the people of France, even to this day. Truly a cause for celebration!

Bastille Day, or Fete National as it is known to the French is celebrated over two days. Traditionally, the fire stations in Paris open their doors to the public between 9pm on the 13th July and 4am on the 14th, for music and dancing, spilling out onto the streets for the public to enjoy. A list is published of those stations which will be open in the weeks leading up to the event in local papers and a small donations is usually collected on entry. All the money raised goes to the Paris Fire Brigade Association.

The Town Hall of Paris usually hosts an evening of dancing in the Bastille Square, the original site of the prison. Each year a theme is chosen, reflecting one of the many nationalities of which France has citizens today. In 2007, the theme was African Music and the square was alive with bongo drums and percussion instruments late into the night.

On the 14th at about 10: 30am a grand parade is held on the Champs Elyses from Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde. People line the streets to watch the parade led by the president of France, followed by police cadets, infantry and motorised troops of the military. Military jets will accompany the parade from the air, streaming red, blue and white to represent the colours of the flag.

The parade lasts about 2 hours and is a great spectacle to enjoy, but if large crowds and marching bands is not your thing, a great alternative is a visit to the Lourve Museum, which is open free to the public on this day. It's an excellent chance to enjoy some of the worlds greatest art in the worlds most famous art museum.

Later in the afternoon, the Hippodrome de Longchamp is preparing for the only night of the year where horse racing is allowed after dark. The gates open at about 4pm and the races start by 5pm. The main race is held at 8pm followed by dancing long into the night. For children, pony rides, a barbecue and fair with rides is in full swing throughout the evening. A great option for families.

The most popular event of the day however is usually the fireworks display which takes place that evening. The main show is launched from from the Eiffel Tower but smaller displays are usually held around other parts of Paris, followed by more parties and clubs until the early hours of the morning.

Bastille day is the one day in the year where just about everyone in Paris is free from work and school, to celebrate the democratic foundation of their country, in a most spectacular way. Everyone should enjoy at least one Bastille day in Paris

Finding the Right Defibrillator Pads

Once you've decided on a defibrillator, you'll need to consider keeping the correct defibrillator pads stocked and ready in case of emergency. More schools, businesses, and organizations are buying portable, automated external defibrillators or AEDs to help save the life of someone in cardiac arrest.

Research shows that survival rates increase when defibrillation is used during the first five minutes of cardiac arrest. The symptoms for this condition include a sudden loss of consciousness and the absence of normal breathing. Sadly, the majority of individuals who suffer an attack will not survive, in some cases because a defibrillator doesn't get to the patient in time.

Defibrillators use pads that cover the electrodes. The pads are placed on the patient's chest and help deliver the life-saving shock to the heart. A portable defibrillator generally has directions on where to place the pads, as these units are designed for use with minimal training. Pads conform to the shape of the patient's body for appropriate adhesion and contact with the skin.

When considering pads, it is important to keep in mind the age of potential patients. An older individual with a history of cardiac arrest who keeps a unit in his home will probably only need to have adult pads on hand. In contrast, schools or day cares should have both child and adult pads available. Defibrillator pads for infants and children reduce the shock produce to levels safe for children.

Infant or children's pads should be used for patients who are less than eight years old or who are less than 55 pounds. The pads will read the patient's heart rate just as adult pads do, but they adjust the energy for children. Children's pads are clearly labeled as such to avoid confusion in an emergency and have been designed so that little training is needed to use them. The portable defibrillator in combination with the pads ensures that clear instructions are given and that the charge is adjusted.

Professionals have designed both adult and children's defibrillator pads so that they will withstand CPR and emergency conditions. Choose pads that are designed for the particular unit purchased to ensure optimal use. If possible for your unit, look for pads that are compatible with manual defibrillators so emergency responders can continue to use the pads with they arrive. This will save time when it counts, getting help to the patient more quickly.

Once you've purchased your defibrillator, purchase appropriate additional pads for your unit. If the unit may need to be used on children or infants, buy these specific pads as well. You may also want to consider buying training pads so that caregivers or staff members can practice using the unit before an emergency hits.

Business Continuity Planning

The Disaster Recovery Journal (DRJ) defines Business Continuity Management (BCM) as "A holistic management process that identifies potential impacts that threaten an organization and provides a framework for building resilience with the capability for an effective response that safeguards the interests of its key stakeholders, reputation, brand and value creating activities. The management of recovery or continuity in the event of a disaster. Also the management of the overall program through training, rehearsals, and reviews, to ensure the plan stays current and up to date." (n.d.) Within the scope of BCM comes succession planning, defined by DRJ as "A predetermined plan for ensuring the continuity of authority, decision-making, and communication in the event that key members of executive management unexpectedly become incapacitated." (n.d.)

The Importance of Planning

Why are these planning aspects critical to businesses and governments? Planning to do business during a crisis is critical to being able to perform essential functions during and after the crisis. The prognosis for those without a plan is certain business death:

Of businesses without a disaster recovery plan:

> 80% will fail in just over a year,

> 43% will not even reopen,

> 93 percent that experience a significant data loss are out of business within five years according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor. (Hatter, 2004)

Clearly, the evidence supports the need for a business to be prepared for disasters. The question then becomes, "What is a disaster?" DRI International offers the following as the definition of a disaster: "A disaster is a sudden, unplanned calamitous event that creates an inability on an organizations part to provide the critical business functions for some predetermined period of time and which results in great damage or loss." (2006)

Implied in the DRI definition is the loss being to an "unacceptable" level. If a sudden, unplanned event occurred that prevented the business from performing critical business functions and was going to result in a loss of fifty million dollars due to law suits, but the company carries insurance for one hundred million dollars, the loss may not be "unacceptable". The loss has been mitigated with the insurance; however, the company may now be battling a public relations issue related to the law suit. As pointed out in a Harvard Business Review, "Companies sometimes misclassify a problem, focusing on the technical aspects and ignoring the issues of perception." (Augustine, 2000)

Utilizing this definition of disaster opens the planning paradigm to many different scenarios outside the traditionally defined natural, manmade, technological, and terrorism events. Suddenly the definition of disaster allows for more varies considerations, including product recall; class action and individual law suits; and executive defection, resignation, termination, arrest, contract expiration, or death. All of these items can create "an inability on an organizations part to provide critical business functions...which results in great damage or loss."

Denial

The definition of disaster also helps mitigate another phenomenon in crisis response: denial. As Augustine points out, "This stage of crisis management is often the most challenging: recognizing that, in fact, there is a crisis." (Augustine, 2000) Setting a quantifiable threshold for "unacceptable" loss allows executives to discern that there is a crisis situation that requires a response. It is only when the crisis is acknowledged that the inevitable effects can be mitigated.

Succession Planning

Wikipedia defines succession planning "as the process of identifying and preparing suitable employees through mentoring, training and job rotation, to replace key players such as the chief executive officer (CEO) within an organization as their terms expire." As explained in this statement by Brent Filson, "It's a common occurrence, a CEO leads a company to record earnings, retires and in just a couple of years, those once high-flying earnings are dropping like shot ducks. Observers blame the new leadership team. But most likely the observers are wrong. It's not just the new leaders who are screwing up. Instead, it was most likely the former CEO... So when a decline follows the departure of great leaders, the safe bet is that those "great" leaders haven't hired and developed leaders - and so really weren't great at all, no matter what results they got." (Filson, n.d.) A trait of excellent military leadership requires the leader to develop the personnel below him to ascend in to the position the leader occupies so the leader is free to move up the ranks, or so the subordinates are capable of handling battlefield situations if the leader is incapacitated. A military unit should not have the survivability of a snake, where cutting off the tail is not a problem, but cutting off the head (leader) results in the death of the unit.

Development of the next generation of leader is a paramount task. "It is instructive here to recall that Noah started building the ark before it began to rain." (Augustine, 2000) Prior planning prevents poor performance. Without the proper methodology being utilized to prepare for personnel turn-over or unavailability, the corporation can be sent into panic hiring, can fail to continue to implement strategic plans because of the loss of a key individual, and multiple other pitfalls because they were not ready.

Short Term Needs

Planning must account for short time frame notification items. What does the company do when two executive VPs are killed in a plane crash? Who has been groomed and is ready to be "acting" in their place until they can be either ramped up to the permanent replacement or until an executive search reveals the best candidate? When a top executive resigns and moves to a competitor, has the company already instituted a program to ensure that individuals know that strategic plans, customer accounts, and other vital critical business information is in fact the exclusive property of the company and had these key individuals sign off on non-disclosure agreements? If they had not done this prior to hiring the defecting manager, are they prepared to ensure that incoming key personnel are required to affirm their loyalty in exchange for the position?

Mid-Range Needs

Personnel will retire. The text gives the example of GM and their planning process. Any company that is not preparing a like plan for grooming and testing the capabilities of personnel who may be tapped to be the top executive must seriously consider how prepared they really are to do business. Failing to plan is, in effect, planning to fail.

Retirements with long lead windows give companies ample time to try people in the proposed position, to be more closely mentored, or to be given charge of substantially more responsibility to see how they are able to handle the situations that they will be confronted with when they are given the nod.

Long Term Needs

The United States is entering an era where the baby-boomer generation population will begin to affect balance in the worker availability pool. Starting in 2010, the demographic growth-rate balance starts to shift, and by 2015, the 65-and-over age group starts to grow at a faster rate than the 20-to-64 age group." (Allier, J.J. and Kolosh, Keneth, 2005)

"Organizations that understand the immediacy of the baby boom exit and thoughtfully prepare for it will be in the best position to achieve unmatched success." (Allier, J.J. and Kolosh, Keneth, 2005) The authors offer questions businesses should be asking themselves to prepare for the coming demographic change. Some of them are:

> What are your company's demographics (age, gender, position, years in position and anniversary date)?

> What are your company's retirement policies? Is early retirement encouraged or discouraged?

> What mechanisms and programs must be put in place now to capture key competencies and critical work knowledge of employees who will be retiring?

> Will your organization need to increase its reliance on new immigrants?

> If your organization is offshoring, what is the age breakdown of your overseas partners?

> Will your offshoring partners face a labor shortage that may impact their ability to provide services?

(Allier, J.J. and Kolosh, Keneth, 2005)

Allier and Kolosh also point out that businesses need to position themselves to deal with the needs of an aging population. There may be a need for unique skill sets and competencies, as well as a need for new or modified product designs to be marketed to the aging population. These issues tie back into business continuity planning. To continue to be competitive in the future, businesses have to prepare for the shifting change in the average age.

Not Just for Executive

When developing succession plans, it is important to remember that the scope should not be narrowly focused to just the executives of the corporation. Steve Nelson, the MSPB's policy director, said, "Succession planning is often focused on top leadership when we need to be looking at critical skill areas at all levels." (Welles, 2006) Marta Brito Perez, associate director of human capital leadership and merit system accountability at OPM, said, "Succession planning has nothing to do with age. Succession planning is just identifying high-risk jobs and how to fill them." (Welles, 2006)

The Process

The process of succession planning entails assessing what positions are critical to have a succession contingency plan. The positions are assessed, and then the skill sets of the candidates that could fill these positions are assessed, factoring in the time frame that would be required to get them up to speed for the position. A training program must then be implemented to ensure that there is progress in bringing these individuals closer to a more immediate insertion rate in case a planned position turns over. This will ensure a more seamless transfer for the person in waiting and provide a measure of corporate stability in a challenging time.

Summary

Succession planning is one piece of the overall business continuity planning process. It is a piece that cannot be over looked. Ignoring succession planning will leave the company without properly developed managers and key personnel to fill the shoes of those who leave for whatever reason.

Why Most People Fail In Network Marketing

I do not really believe that 95% of people actually fail in the industry of network marketing. What I really believe is that 95% of people who get involved with network marketing actually fail to make the amount of money that they set out to make. In fact many of these people will actually lose money and end up giving up on their network marketing company, which results in failure.

There are several reasons why most people who start network marketing will never make the amount of money they intend on. In my opinion there are two main important reasons why people fail in network marketing.

The first and ultimate main reason for such a high failure rate in the network marketing industry is the lack up proper training.

Lets face it; this industry is an industry that is pursued by armatures. What I mean by this is that in this industry of network marketing we have people from every other occupation and industry who come to the MLM industry because they want to work at home and leave their current job. These people will want to leave their occupation in which they have gone to university or college for several years where they were trained in, so they can join an MLM company, which they were not trained in, and work from home. The problem is most people think that they should automatically be a successful superstar from day one.

People do not understand that they are leaving a profession that they were trained in so they can go work in an industry that they were not trained in.

What is creating the 95% failure rate is that 95% of the people who do leave their current occupation to pursue network marketing will not believe they need to now get trained in their new business or career. Most people will just rely on just their upline in their company who is in their same position as well for the training. Then the 5% of people who do succeed are the ones who take training very seriously and get and pay for the proper training. They become students of network marketing.

The second most important reason for the 95% failure rate in network marketing is lack of money or capital for building the business.

Many people who join the network marking industry are looking to make money and do not want to have to spend the money to make the money. Believe it or not but many people will pursue this industry looking for a cheap little program that cost them $20 - $50 and then want to promote the business with only using free methods. If people do use some paid methods such as buying business opportunity leads or newspaper advertising etc. they will not make enough money to even cover their cost of advertising. Then they will eventually run out of money and have to quit what they are doing. These people are almost dead in the water before they even start by doing this.

People need to realize that when they join a network marketing company and want to build a business that they are going to need to spend some money.

If you do not have boat loads of money to just throw into your business for advertising then you are going to need a business that allows you to make lots of money fast.

You need to have a product and service that has a profit margin that allows you to make a worth while profit. Do you realize that the products and services in a traditional store has a huge mark up on price? This has a lot to do with giving a margin for getting customers in the door. The same needs to apply with your network marketing business. I am not talking about the company having a margin to allow paying out commissions to the distributors, I am talking about the distributor having the profit margin for allowing a good marketing budget.

So in conclusion I really believe that if you really want to be in 5% that really succeed, you will need proper training and a product and service that has good profit margin so you can make more money fast to pay for your advertising.

Help! I've Got Damaged Plaster

Old ugly or damaged plaster walls and ceilings are truly a headache and an eyesore.

But don't throw up your hands in despair. The problems are often not as grevious as they might appear. Damaged plaster is certainly fixable, often even by the homeowner himself.

Many years ago, when I was a young man being trained in drywall finishing, we encountered a problem on one of our jobs. As we worked to install and finish new drywall partitions in a drugstore, the owner complained to us about his old plaster ceiling.

Damaged it certainly were. Old lath and plaster from the early 1900's, the ceiling was riddled with cracks and scaling paint. An eyesore of the first order.

The customer wanted to know what could be done about his plaster problems. We said we would deal with it, without knowing immediately what we were going to do.

My boss and I talked about it and decided that we could treat the cracks like drywall seams. Apply paper drywall tape in a bed of joint compound over each crack. A couple coats of topping and each crack was out of sight and reinforced against reopening.

The final step was to apply new texture over the whole big ceiling. We chose a sanded skip trowel texture that would hide minor imperfections and blend all the repairs together.

The result? We had a very happy customer and we had added a new trick to our bag.

In the years since, I had dealt with hundreds of damaged plaster jobs using drywall finish materials and texture compounds. And I am happy to say that I have given all these clients relief from their plaster headaches.

Why not use regular plaster materials to fix ugly plaster?

Certainly that is the approach to plaster repair taken by professional plasterers. But I went the route I did because I was using materials and techniques I was already familiar with.

I do know how to use regular plaster, but for ease of handling I like drywall finishing materials. And I have had great success with them.

For the motivated homeowner, I believe it would be a mistake for me to recommend he or she use real plaster, which can be a difficult medium and really is, I believe, the province of the plastering professional.

So, for those who want to tackle the job themselves, I show them how to do it my way. And I am delighted to report that I have seen many success stories.

Have you considered building a home lately? Many people believe that a stagnating housing market points to rough financial times ahead so they tighten their belts and put their wallets away.

What most people dont know is that a cooling market means cheaper building materials, cheaper labor, and faster construction times.

Housing for low-income wage earners is more affordable than it was just a few months ago. The prices for most kinds of building materials are falling which is great news for owner builders.

The housing market is taking a huge down turn. While that is bad news for the economy in general, it does create an advantage for those with low income who wish to build a home. That means that the prices for lumber, cement, and everything else is going down.

Now it's good for us and it will get even better.

As a rule of thumb, I always consider the price of wafer board to be a good indicator of the over all price of building materials. It is used for many different things in home construction.

For those people who dont want to try to build their own home, the opportunity is still there because as the housing market slows down, there will be many contractors willing to work for less money. The availability of experienced contractors will increase in the months ahead.

So if youve been waiting for that perfect time to build a home and not break the bank, now is the time.

Malicious Software, a Problem at a Deeper Level

How do you get a cold? You get exposed to a germ, right? This may be a very simplified explanation of getting a cold, but the basic principle is the same when it comes to malicious software. We all know what malicious software is, it is a program that does unwanted and in many cases destructive things on your computer. Typical examples of malicious software are viruses, spyware and ad-ware. You have to expose your computer to a malicious program to get infected by it. This can happen in many ways, by using an infected Floppy Disk, CD, DVD, hard-drive or flash drive. You may get infected when opening an attachment of an infected e-mail message. But if you use common sense you have a smaller chance of getting infected. Only use disks from trusted sources, dont open strange e-mails and even if you use material from a trusted source, ensure that it is scanned by a respectable Anti-virus scanner.

There is one method of infection I did not mention and that is through the use Internet by browsing from web site to web site. Common sense also plays a role here. If a link looks strange, dont click on it. If you are required to enter sensitive information that is not relevant to your visit, dont do it. By using a browser with good security measures will make you less vulnerable. But one problem that cant be fixed with security software is peoples moral values. Ignorance plays a significant role in infections but I dont believe that it plays such a big role as peoples intentions when using the Internet.

Many infections occur when the user was either doing something illegal or immoral. The evidence is clear when you try to fix an infected PC. The Internet History and the Temporary Internet Files folder is most of the times cluttered with cookies and cache of pornographic and piracy sites. Piracy sites range from pirate music to pirate software. Many of the cracks downloaded from the Internet are actual Trojan Horses (a host program that gives malicious software access to your computer) but they usually imply to bypass the anti-piracy sections of a program to allow the user to use a full licensed version of the software. Sometimes they even do actually crack the software but installs a malicious program in the background without the knowledge of the user. Some sites require users to install specific software in order to gain access to their pirate or pornographic content. These programs are nothing other than spyware, which monitors activities like keystrokes from your keyboard to record passwords. They also spy on your online activity and store this information on their servers in order to send you relevant marketing material and spin you deeper into their web. What users often dont realize is that their PC becomes a source of malicious activity. Many of these companies will load your computer with malicious software and try to infect everyone you communicate with, either through your local network or the Internet. Your PC may become a spamming engine, sending spam to all your contacts. Your PC will in the end earn revenue for these dishonest organizations and you may become an accomplice in illegal activities without even knowing it.

All these are consequences of the immoral and dishonest actions of the user in the first place. If people stay away from piracy and pornography sites we will deal with lesser malicious software threats. If lesser people use these websites, these organizations will make less money from these sites and will in the end be forced to shut it down. This will be to the benefit to the whole online-community, but also the music, television and software industry, due to smaller volumes of piracy. In the end it will put money back into the pocket of the end-user and keep our children safe from the filthy material on the Web.

It is a simple rule, if you keep your online intentions clean, your will have a clean conscience and a clean conscience will go hand-in-hand with a clean computer.

The most common motorized method of propelling small watercraft is the outboard motor. They are a self-contained unit with an engine, propeller, subsidiary systems and are designed to be fixed at the rear (stern) of the craft.

I am pretty sure that, if it were just me, I would be celebrating the holiday season with no more than a fat cup of egg nog, a James Taylor CD, and a few simple handmade gifts for friends and family.

But I have three children, and that means that - like most parents - I must balance the spirit of the season with a series of nagging "wants" and whines.

Preparing Your Sailboat for a Hurricane

During a hurricane your sailboat can be in severe jeopardy even if the storm doesn't pass near to you. The most important thing is to make preparations in advance. As a storm grows close the weather can make it difficult to prepare your boat and supplies could already be sold out. There are different strategies you need to be aware of if your boat is moored at a dock or kept in dry-dock on a trailer. If at all possible it is always best to try to move your boat inland and toward high ground.

If your boat is moored at a dock it is important to re-enforce the moorings and double check that the cleats on the boat and dock are secure. Attach double lashings at each of the four points you are tied off to, and make sure to move the attachment higher up on the pylons to allow for the rising tide. If your sailboat is stored on a trailer make sure to lash the boat down to the trailer at more than one place. Tie the boat down to four different points to secure objects. Drain the air from the trailers tires and place chocks (Bricks, wood or cinder blocks) in front and behind the wheels. In the past, many pronouncements have been made saying that "Including some particular foods in a reducing diet would specifically help overweight people to shed weight more quickly and effectively". Grapefruit was a classic example. Grapefruit meals were the rage for years. More recently, in an American bestseller, pineapple, had magical weight-shedding properties. Unfortunately, all these pronouncements in the past were based on fiction rather than fact certainly not on any established medical fact! Apart from caffeine (which does have a small effect in speeding up the metabolism) no one item we eat or drink has been by scientific methods to have any realistic effect in speeding away our surplus fat. Weight loss depends entirely on the calories we don't consume.

The substance is dietary fibre. Now its possible to cut your calorie consumption and at the same time increase your consumption of dietary fibre from the unrefined cereal foods and the fruits and vegetables which provide it.

If you follow a high-fibre diet you should find that you are more satisfied on less calories. And more of the calories that go into your mouth will, to put it bluntly, go straight through and down the lavatory.

Of course, the fewer calories the body uses from food the more it must pull from from your surplus body fat, so this adds up to faster weight loss.

Another simple definition which will appeal to everyone who has ever tried to slim: More weight loss for less will power!

When people consume high-fibre diets they excrete more calories in their stools (faeces). In several experiments, scientists have engaged in the task of evaluating the stools of those following high-fibre meals and have found that the calories excreted are measurably greater in number than the calories excreted by those on the normal, varied Western meals, rich in refined carbohydrate foods or, indeed, on any other pattern of eating. Tests conclude that the increased calorie content of the faeces amounts to nearly ten per cent when people follow high-fibre diets.

Suffice it to say, those calories which are being flushed away are not being used by the body which means that the body is having to use more of its own surplus fat to combine in for them. So on a 1,000 calorie high-fibre diet the body is going to shed weight more quickly than on a normal 1,000 calorie diet of varied food or on any other 1,000 calorie diet.

Before the high-fibre research findings it was concluded that weight loss depended entirely on the number of calories consumed compared with the number removed by the body. Now we have to factor in another addition to this simple statement....

Weight loss depends on the number and the source of calories eaten. The rate of weight loss will be influenced not only by the amount you consume, in terms of calories, but also by which foods you choose to make up that calorie intake.

In recent years the evidence for the health benefits of fibre, or roughage as it used to be called, has grown so strong that it has filtered through from the medical journals and is now well known to the British and American public.

Following is an example of a breakfast recipe that should add a little variety to that all important meal, as well as supplying important vitamins, minerals, enzymes and fiber. Preparation

Whether reading about Lincoln, our sixteenth president of the United States, who persevered as a president and abolished slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation, or the Louisiana Purchase whereby America obtained a huge acreage of land for about the price of a modem day hotel. Also the great depression of the 1920's affected many people mentally and physically--creating a tough decade for all our citizens. These and many other historical events are studied because of knowledge--and knowledge is the power of history.

In 1860 the political conflict was slavery, and Abraham Lincoln was elected as President of the United States. Lincoln's party, the Republicans, stood for the total abolition of slavery in America. "A house divided against itself cannot stand," Lincoln stated.

Furthermore, "This government cannot endure permanently, half slave and have free...I do not expect the house to fall.. .It will become all one thing or another" (Young Republic 25). In 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring all slaves in the Confederacy free--by his authority as president and commander in chief.

History accelerated the size of our United States when our third president, Thomas Jefferson, made a deal to purchase the Louisiana Territory from France for fifteen million dollars. This enormous purchase almost doubled the size of our nation and we obtained some of the most excellent and fertile land in the whole world.

Many other U.S. lands were obtained only by blood, sacrifice, and wars. When a man fights for his lands, he often obtains victory. Today we read in our texts about the blood, sweat, and tears that our military leaders undertook to gain such victories. We owe a debt of gratitude to our government and military leaders.

Though it may not be discussed enough, our war hero's are truly the freedom fighters that captured the freedom we so easily enjoy today. Jefferson's "Rough Riders" should be praised for just such a wonderful effort to keep and sustain our freedom. This was a tough bunch of soldiers with a brave commander who was almost unstoppable.

America's economy took a huge dive downward during the Great Depression. The stock market crash of 1929 left citizens standing in line for bread and looking for work like never before in our history. History's records indicate that investors lost everything.

Thousands of banks, businesses, and schools had to close down. A ton of loans were unable to be repaid because of low crop prices. Many usually busy U.S. workers suddenly found themselves without work. Our economy has always impacted our society. The study of our economy is essential to the understanding of our history.

When we study history we learn a great deal about our country and ourselves. Abraham Lincoln continues to come to mind as a mirror to us, because he persevered as president, when others might have quit. Abraham Lincoln showed the American people young and old how to have faith when facing the challenges of life.

Lincoln also was an example of "balance" in his life, having been shot by John Wilkes Booth, at a theater, of all places. He wasn't too intelligent or strong-minded to stop enjoying his life. He took time for the things that were important, and that leaves a strong legacy for all Americans.

To conclude, one must look at all the historical facts and events recorded from history, to acquire what may be penned as "historical knowledge." This is not just head knowledge and rote memorization, but an understanding of the facts, deaths, purchases, wars, business dealings, and most of all the understanding of the "character" of the people behind these major events.

There are many Americans who are devoted to studying the textbooks, newspapers, and magazines of the past. To these brave ones we must give our respect, for they are a picture of the past, but more importantly, they are a picture of our hope for the future. Many great presidents lead this nation to become one of the greatest nations in the world today, and certainly the most powerful.

Abraham Lincoln led our nation out of slavery, and by doing so, he opened up social, political, and economic opportunity for all people and he truly led us back to the Declaration of Independence.

The events of the past have also made their way into the classroom with the almost one hundred year old pledge of allegiance. Our pledge is a constant reminder of the victories that our great leaders obtained from the past: "I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America, and to the republic, for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

The United States of America is a free country today, because of sacrifice, and we owe a huge debt of gratitude to our forefathers who fought to make this country a republic, a free land, a land where anything is possible with the right amount of hard work and solid spiritual foundations.

The IDOT - Illinois Department of Transportation received an "F" grade for emergency preparedness from a real independent research report, even though the Department of Homeland Security funded over 52 Million. The Illinois Trucking Association apparently was unable to assist in remedying the problem. The Illinois Trucking Association touts this as one of their major contributions to our Nations Truck Safety.

Just because the trucking Association sits in committees for hours putting into minutes what a true leader could have done in seconds does not make them an expert on the subject. Often an industry association will go out of their way to promote the fact that sat on committees with government, but seldom when the results were a dismal failure. Rather than taking credit for being on a specific committee that is relevant to the future success and security of the nation, it is more important to protect the American People.

Only success is relevant and the Illinois Department of Transportation which received an "F-Grade" on emergency preparedness and terrorism is nothing to hang one's hat on, especially after the uncovered plot from the FBI in NY recently to attack a fuel pipeline to the airport. We must demand more from our Industry Associations, our government and the many committees that are assigned to the important tasks of our society and civilization.

We've been conditioned to reflect upon the repercussions of a catastrophic life experience and lament, "If I only would have...Hindsight, is 20/20." Most of us are aware that 20/20 is an acuity index used to express normal vision (the clarity or sharpness of vision). That means if you have 20/20 vision, from 20 feet away, you see what most people can see from 20 feet away. The results we receive after we read the letters on the Snellen Eye Chart only measure what we see from 20 feet away, at the time of the examination. Likewise, a real time, life experience can only measure what we can see, during the time of the life experience.

When we step back and separate ourselves from a lesson-learned, life experience, we receive what is referred to as "hindsight." Hindsight is the process of deriving meaning from what we have seen or experienced. It's an examination of the "lesson learned." Hindsight allows us to reflect and clearly see our past, then, with depth perception, connect it to our "now." When we fuse these two pictures together, we gain optimal focus and extraordinary clarity. It allows us to shed light on a decade-old event with pristine, peripheral vision. Hindsight let's us start from the beginning, middle or end. From here, we can go fast or slow; up or down, forward or backwards. We can even pause or use a high power lens to zoom in and inspect. Hindsight rocks! It allows us to see clearly even from the great distance of years! That's not "normal" vision; therefore, hindsight couldn't possibly be 20/20.

You may be wondering, "Well, if hindsight isn't 20/20, then, what is it?" In truth, hindsight is at least 40/20. Remember, 20/20 vision is what is recognized as "normal vision." From 20 feet away, you see what most people see from 20 feet away. Hindsight is closer to 40/20, which is exceptional vision. This means that from 40 feet away, you see what the rest of us can only see from 20 feet away. Does that make sense? 40/20 hindsight vision indicates that when you step back from a life experience, your perception is amazingly sharper and loaded with much more detail so you can learn the life lesson. It was impossible to do this when you were closer and actually living the experience in real time.

It's hard to imagine anything more important than learning from life's lessons. And, as you can see, it's so unsophisticated, it's misunderstood. Early Summer Steelhead Return Encouraging

With a dismal Spring Chinook season ready to come to an end, the early return of Rogue River Summer Steelhead has anglers brimming with hope.

With over 4000 steelhead over Gold Rey Dam, (as of July 21st) angling for what many consider the crown jewel of Rogue River fish, has been consistent, if not downright HOT!!

Reports of ten pound(or better) fish have been coming in,and these fish are aggressive and seem to be taking both bait and flies. As an extra bonus, with the lack of salmon fishermen lining the banks of the Rogue, the ultimate fishing experience is downright pleasant.

I spent a day last week floating the upper Rogue and between our six fishermen we boated over 150 fish.The bulk of them were trout and half pounders, but our boat landed four steelhead over six pounds, with the largest a nice wild 30 inch beauty that had us doing a Chinese fire drill as we chased it down river. For those of you familiar with the summer run of steelhead on the Rogue, you know that fish much over 24 or 25 inches in July are pretty rare. So, to say that this early return of steelhead is encouraging, is quite the understatement. Just for good measure we hooked --but unfortunately lost- a couple of Spring Chinook that kept us busy for twenty minutes while we tried to land them on eight pound test.

We were also lucky enough to get a cool cloud covering that kept us from suffering in the predicted 106 degree temperatures that had been forecast for that day.

So, for those of you that are depressed over the poor return of salmon this year on the Rogue River, you can get out your flyfishing gear, light tackle, and Tevas and start fishing for Summer Steelhead.

Do you believe that child labor is wrong? Do you believe that children should be in school as compared to a shop making clothes that people wear? If you answered yes, to both of these, you are not alone. There are many educational institutions nationwide within our country whom have a "Sweatfree Policy" with their curriculum materials as well as certain apparel. These particular institutions have adapted a "Code of Conduct for the Manufacturer of Apparel". The apparel industry has been exposed to rampant worker abuse. A man by the name of Andrew Ross reported back in 1997 the following, "The textile and apparel industries are a showcase of horrors for the labor abuses sanctioned by the global free trade economy, where child labor, wage slavery, and employer cruelty are legion." ~ NO SWEAT: Fashion, free trade, and the rights of garment workers, Andrew Ross, editor, 1997.

I do feel our own economy needs a serious facelift, but why can we not be humane about it? I feel that consumers have more power than they even know. I feel that consumers should hold corporations accountable to respect the rights of workers, but not only as workers, but as human beings and they need to be paid a "living" wage, not a "starvation" wage.

I do not feel we should boycott these corporations, for why should we? We enjoy their products, the reality here is that we enjoy purchasing these items, besides, boycotting these corporations would only hurt jobs in developing countries. I support jobs for developing countries, but I feel that consumers should want the people of those countries to have jobs with dignity and fair wages. I believe the CEO's of these huge corporations could spare some money to ensure the people whom are indeed aiding in their wealth can work with dignity and support their families, and if the CEO's refuse? The consumers should demand fair wages. What if these children were our own children? Our own families? This places a different perspective on things for every child performing these tasks is someone's son/daughter or someone's mother/father. This truly places a realistic perspective on this most often ignored epidemic.

Next, fill the barrel at least half full with brandy and leave for at least three days this will assist in the flavors later on. Some people drink these dregs it is up to you.

Finally, start filling the barrel with you choice of port. A good mix to start with follows. Why Aren't There Any Teaching Jobs in Michigan? Or New Jersey? Or Pennsylvania? Or New York?

Michigan is one of the absolute hardest states to find a job in. In fact, many areas in the United States have a surplus of qualified teachers and very, very few open positions to fill.

Why? It's the economy. The manufacturing jobs that were once the staple of the northeastern economy are going bankrupt and/or relocating in other countries, where labor is cheaper. (You can thank NAFTA for the job losses.) As high-paying jobs leave the state, young people with families leave to areas with stronger economies. Schools, therefore, need fewer teachers because there are fewer students.

The population in Michigan isn't growing much (if at all). The economy is dead. The state is getting less tax money as companies and people leave the state. And, yet, Michigan still has high-quality teacher colleges that pump out hundreds of candidates each year. The result: Lots of excellent teacher candidates in a location with no available jobs.

This trend isn't unique to Michigan. Similar teacher job markets exist throughout the northeastern United States, in places such as Upstate New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

So, if you're in one of these tough job markets, what should you do? If moving is a possibility for you, consider relocating to places with stronger economies and booming populations like: Las Vegas, Arizona, Carolina, Colorado, and Florida.

If moving is not an option for you, you can still get a job; you just have to work REALLY hard to market yourself. Schools still need SOME new teachers, though certainly not enough to seriously decrease the huge supply. In order to land a job, you'll have to market yourself so well that you stand out as one of the top 2% of teaching candidates.

Suggestions:

1. After you've formally applied for a job through a district's human resources office, send a paper copy of your resume and a letter of interest to the PRINCIPAL of the school you want to work at. HR offices typically forward 10-20% of the candidates to principals and ignore the other 80%. Since principals usually have direct control over hiring, you need to make direct contact with them. If a principal is impressed with your qualifications, he/she can easily arrange an interview.

2. Teaching jobs advertised in newspapers and on the Internet typically have TONS of candidates applying. Your best bet-- call schools directly and ask if they'll be hiring in the near future. Most jobs aren't advertised heavily (because they already have lots of candidates). The jobs that ARE advertised heavily will have way too many qualified candidates -- which decreases your chance of getting the job. So, use the phone book to find those unadvertised jobs.

3. Be sure your cover letter is so good they won't pass you up. Do something to make it stand out-- color letterhead, bold faced key words, bulleted lists-- something. Have a great introduction sentence that catches their interest. If you're not a great cover letter/resume designer, have it done professionally.

4. Practice common interview questions beforehand. Typically similar questions are asked at all teacher interviews. If you practice beforehand and think about what you'll say, the questions will seem routine and familiar.

Malignant Mesothelioma - Types, Causes, Stages and Treatment Options

Malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancerous tumors originating in the body tissue known as the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a specialized layer of cells that line and protect many internal organs such as the chest and abdominal cavities.

Types of Malignant Mesothelioma

The first type of malignant mesothelioma is called Pleural Mesothelioma or mesothelioma of the pleura. It is the most common type of mesothelioma making up approximately 75% of all mesothelioma cases. The pleura is a thin serous membrane found between the lungs and the chest cavity that provides a lubricated surface preventing the lungs from chafing against the chest walls. It also serves as a protective layer.

The second most common type of mesothelioma is Peritoneal Mesothelioma, also known as mesothelioma of the peritoneum. The peritoneum is a thin serous membrane that encloses the organs of the abdomen. Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a rare form of malignant mesothelioma cancer. This disease accounts for approximately 10% to 20% of all mesothelioma cases. It tends to be a more invasive form of cancer; patients diagnosed with this disease have a shorter life expectancy than if they had attracted Pleural Mesothelioma.

The third and least common type of mesothelioma is pericardial mesothelioma also known as mesothelioma of the pericardium. It accounts for less than 10% of all mesothelioma cases. The pericardium (heart sac) is the serous membrane that surrounds and protects the heart.

There are about 2,200 new cases of malignant mesothelioma of the visceral pleura each year. Mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose and is rarely curable. The most common symptoms are dyspnea and chest wall pain.

Causes Asbestos is the predominant cause of malignant mesothelioma of the visceral pleura. The period between the time of exposure to asbestos and the onset of symptoms is about 20 to 50 years. Because of this late onset, it occurs most commonly in the later years of life. It also occurs more often in men than in women.

Diagnosis

Doctors usually make an incision through the chest wall and insert an instrument called a thoracoscope between two ribs to view the area. Doctors will then do a biopsy to select a tissue sample that can be analyzed under a microscope.

Stages of Mesothelioma

Stage I: The cancer is found in the lining of the chest cavity near the lung and heart or in the diaphragm or the lung.

Stage II: The cancer has spread beyond the lining of the chest to lymph nodes in the chest.

Stage III: Cancer has spread into the chest wall, center of the chest, heart, through the diaphragm, or abdominal lining, and in some cases into nearby lymph nodes.

Stage IV: Cancer has spread to distant organs or tissues.

Treatment Radiation and radiotherapy are used in situations where the cancer is localized at the point of origin. Chemotherapy is used in more advanced stages of malignant mesotheliomas.

Cytoreductive surgery plus hyperthermic (heated) chemotherapy improves the survival and quality of life for patients with peritoneal metastases (tumors involving the lining of the abdomen).

Surgery is the option used for Stage I malignant mesothelioma. For stages II to IV, treatment by surgery is still evolving.

So, what is Overture?

Like Google, Yahoo sells paid placement advertising links that appear on its own site and which are distributed to others. These are sold through Overture. Yahoo purchased Overture as part of an acquisition in October 2003.

Overture also provides sponsor links for many other search engines, most notably: MSN, AllTheWeb and AltaVista.

Today, Google accounts for about 46% of websearches. Yahoo accounts for about 22.5% and MSN 12.6%. So you see, Overture really is just as important to use as Google Adwords. Personally I use overture extensively and I highly recommend that you do so too.

First of all, make sure that you set for yourself a reasonable daily budget. That way you won't spend too much. You can do this in overture.

Secondly, Overture works differently to Google adwords. Google adwords uses some sort of fuzzy logic to decide it's ad placement positioning, calculated from such things as:
a) Length of time the advertiser has been advertising with this adword. Sometimes it takes up to a month to realize the full potential of an adword in Google.
b) Click through rate
c) Max cost per click

Overture simply uses an auction system to decide which ad gets displayed highest. If you bid more money per click, you will rate higher. It's as simple as that.

For instance if Mr X bids $1 per click on "Learn Spanish" and Mr Y bids $0.95 and Mr Z bids $1.10. Then Mr Z's ad will be #1, Mr X's ad will be #2 and Mr Y's ad will be placed #3.

With this difference in mind, there is a different strategy that you should use in overture.

Overture Strategy #1

Qualify your ads.
In Google it matters what your click through rate is and you are rewarded for having a higher click through rate with lower costs per click. In Overture, all that matter is how much you are prepared to pay per click.

Hence it is very important that you bid higher than you would in Google, but you ensure that your traffic is of a higher quality by "Qualifying" your listings. You can do this in many ways.

1. By mentioning the price of the product. If somewhere in you overture ad you mention something like: "Only $99!" or simply "Costs $99.95" or something to that effect, then people who aren't at all interested in paying any money for anything won't click on your ad.

2. By mentioning more product details. Remember that in Overture you get to take up more space describing a product, so you should describe what it is so that people know what they are clicking on.

3. I personally recommend only promoting in Overture USA and Overture UK, they seem to have a higher proportion of buyers than in other countries.

4. Mention how the product is delivered. Eg If your product is an online product, say so, some people are only interested in physical products.

Remember, if you are profiting a large amount per click AND if you want to increase your click through rate, simply remove some of the qualifiers, such as price.... above.

Overture Strategy #2

Conversion Tracking
Most website owners, including us, will be happy to add their affiliate's overture conversion tracking code to their purchase page. This means that you will be able to tell precisely which keywords are making the sales and which aren't. And also how much it is costing you per sale.

If a website owner is not willing to add your conversion code, you may want to consider if you really wish to be promoting their website.

It is important to have access to valuable conversion statistics, to see where you are profiting, and where you are struggling.

Overture Strategy #3

Separate Ads for Each Keyword
I know this is time consuming, but in the long run, it is highly beneficial. First of all, make sure that you use the keyword(s) in the title and ad copy.

When your keyword is inserted in the Title and Ad Copy, the come up in bold when someone searches for it in Yahoo or MSN. For example, search for "Learn Spanish" in Yahoo and notice how with the sponsored links, the words "learn" and "Spanish" come up in bold in all the ad listings.

Overture Strategy #4

Try to get the #4 or #5 Position. (even #6 isn't bad)
This increases the likelihood of your ad being seen. The top 3-4 ads get displayed at the top of yahoo and msn searches. The following ads are displayed at the bottom and right hand side of the page in yahoo, and down the right hand side in MSN.

There is a significant difference between being placed 5/6 and being placed 7/8.

Overture allows you to "bid to position" on a particular search term. You can do this once you have set up your keywords. I strongly recommend bidding to position #5 at the very least. In fact you'll get quite good traffic from them. There is no need (unless you are profiting wildly!) to spend more money to place your ad in the top 3 positions which usually get fought over fiercely. Remember to keep an eye on your ads, so you don't inadvertently become caught up in a bidding for position war.

Overture Strategy #5

Make sure that All your Bids are set to Auto bid.
This means that you won't be spending more than you want to for any term, and you will pay less money if your competitors aren't spending as much.

Many people have begun to have some fun this summer, either by vacationing away, vacationing at home, or by watching every television marathon that doesn't actually include people running real marathons (that'd be too ironic). Still, there are likely some who are in need of suggestions. Well, here I am to save the day, with a list of activities sure to stop your summer blues:

- In most areas, the summer implies that there will be some heat. And what better way to use that heat than to have ice races with friends! Simply go outside with a friend and at least two ice cubes of the same size. Then place your ice cubes on the ground or a flat surface and watch whose melts first. Yes, ice is exciting. Who would have thought that "fun" could be spelled with three letters?

- Nothing says summer like a talking Slip 'n' Slide. So why not... Oh never mind, if it talks, then it can tell you the rest...

- It's time to take the cover off of the grill, grab a bag of marshmallows and create your own Peeps. Yours will look nothing like the Easter variety at first, but you have a couple of months to work on it, assuming the fun doesn't overwhelm you...

- You don't need a swimming pool to swim. Simply put on your swimming clothes and wait outside on the street for an open invitation. Wearing scuba gear and goggles will increase the odds of this occurring, or -- at the very least -- will make you a greater target for water balloons, which is pretty much the same as swimming anyway...

- Do birds really need those baths set out for them? If the answer to this question is "no" -- and I am not really sure of this one -- then simply kick them out and take their spots. If anyone questions this activity, tell him/her it's a hockey game and you're playing left wing. If a hockey player asks you, tell him/her your game is for the birds, which is basically accurate, even though you kicked them out earlier...

- Lemonade stands are a hassle to create. So why not take over someone else's stand and negotiate that you will take a certain percentage of the profit, simply because you made the declaration to do so. To make this more fun, put your name on the sign and give all of your friends a free cup. If you are above the age of 30, quit your day job in order to run this business more successfully. Make sure your old high school classmates see your success. Send them e-cards if possible...

GPS, or Global Positioning System, has become for the 21st century what bloodhounds and used to be for police forces and bread crumbs were for Hansel and Gretel: both a way to find a person or target, and a way for a person to keep from becoming lost. GPS uses its eyes in the sky, a group of twenty-one operating and three backup satellites in orbit nearly twelve thousand miles above the Earth, to interpret the signals sent from GPS devices down below.

GPS translates those signals into information about the latitude, longitude, and altitude of the device that sent it, and beams the information back to a GPS receiver in the same device. The whole operation is done in split seconds, accurate to within five meters, and is the result of over three decades and twelve billion (and rising) dollars spent by the US Department of Defense.

Military GPS Applications

While the DoD initially installed GPS systems in their Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles to help them locate their targets with pinpoint accuracy, the GPS technology has now fund applications far beyond its use in weapons systems. The US military used it once again in 1991, during the first Gulf War, when GPS was essential for the mapping of huge uncharted tracts of desert.

Because GPS information can be provided as a readout, interpreted, and printed as a map of the target terrain, it saved the military countless man-hours and risk to the personnel who would otherwise have had to map the desert while airborne. GPS has its defensive purposes as well; it allows a country to monitor the movements of military troops in another country across the globe and to prepare for an attack well lin advance.

Commercial GPS Application

The first non-military use of sGPS was for marine applications; those lost at sea and unable to navigate by traditional means could simply push a button to signal the GPS satellites and have their latitude and longitude appearing on a screen in a matter of seconds. Today GPS is most widely used in the aviation industry, as an aid to routing aircraft.
